Sacrifice Costs Us

My husband earned his President’s Club trip this year, an all-expenses-paid vacation to Hawaii. When he won this award two other times, when the kids were younger, I went with him. But this year, I chose not to, as a protest against the human rights atrocities and power abuses happening in that country.

It was one thing to make this decision before he left. It was another thing to hold onto my convictions and principles when he was actually there, in the humid air of Kauai, having a luxury experience that I chose not to be a part of. Jason felt strange being on his own, with no spouse (and he said he really missed me). He understood my reasons for not attending, and he was supportive, but it still cost both of us something.

When he sent pictures of the palm trees in the breeze, the Pacific Ocean, the nightly gifts, fruity tropical drinks, sea turtles, and the azure water of the winding lazy river, I felt the sacrifice I had made deep in my bones. I still believed in why I had refused to go, but I had to spend some time reckoning with what it costs us to make sacrifices.

I’m concerned that in our uber-convenient world—with overnight deliveries, food coming to our homes thirty minutes after we’ve ordered it, and social media marketing promising us that we can have anything we want, whenever we want it, with a minimum amount of inconvenience or fuss—we seem to have excised most forms of sacrifice from our lives.

I talked to my new counsellor about this. I said, “I’m proud of myself for making this hard decision not to go on the free trip. Jason didn’t have a choice. He works for a company based in the US, but I don’t. I have a choice, and I refuse to set foot on American soil until democracy and empathy are in place. But I still feel sad, for both of us, that I’m not there with him.”

She reminded me that of course I would have mixed feelings. That it’s healthy to miss him and to feel sad that I wasn’t there, but also to be proud that I took this moral stand. I can’t push others to take it with me, but I can take it for myself. All of these things can be true at once, and at the heart of these complicated feelings sits the price we pay for sacrifice.

I think I wanted it to be easier. In general, our internet-based lives have become so convenient that I tend to forget that a large part of the human experience involves pain and loss. Making a sacrifice is supposed to cost us something. It has a pinch of hurt baked right in. We find meaning where there’s a cost to be paid. When it’s free, and easy, and we have to give up nothing at all that matters to us, we aren’t sacrificing anything.

I do know that my small stand in not accepting a free trip to Hawaii is not going to move the needle politically. It’s not likely to do anything at all. But it matters to me. I needed to feel this pinch, this personal cost, to remember that many, many other people don’t have it easy at all. They are terrified, of being grabbed off the street, zip-tied, ripped away from their children, and imprisoned in horrendous conditions with no due process.

People are starving in Palestine and being bombed daily with no access to clean water or medicine. And in Ukraine, where their courageous refusal to bend the knee to a ruthless dictator has led to a war dragging on for years with an incredibly high price tag of sacrifice for so many Ukrainians.

There comes a time when each one of us has to draw a line that we simply cannot cross and live with ourselves. Lately, I’m disgusted by my own cowardice. I look to those who were captured on the Global Sumud Flotilla and I feel ashamed. I want to do more, to feel the pain of the sacrifice, to say NO MORE to this capitalist greed and mindless destruction of our planet and our resources and our compassion so billionaires can become richer and more powerful.

We all have to start where we are. To do what we can. To remember that sacrifice is supposed to cost us. Nothing worth achieving in life is free. It hurts, and these political systems that have become so evil and powerful and unfair will have to collapse and then be rebuilt, which will mean a lot of sacrifice for a lot of people. I’m practicing that now, holding it in my hands to see what it feels like.

I’m crying my tears when they come, and trying to keep my anguished heart open. I’m looking for more ways to speak up, to be involved, to believe that ordinary people have to be the ones to heal this mess and be brave enough to imagine a better future together. It will hurt, and it will cost us, and we must hold true to what we believe and who we are at our core. Otherwise the evil will win, and that’s not a situation I can countenance.

Recalibrating Identity

I just returned from a trip to Kelowna, BC where I was speaking at a teachers’ conference. In previous years, Jason has come with me on this work trip, but this year I decided to go alone. I listened to music, and some episodes of the Smartless podcast, but realised partway through the 5 hour drive that being alone in the car helped me to recalibrate a sense of my own personal identity.

As women, and mothers, so often our identity becomes intertwined with the identities of those we love and nurture. It can become challenging to separate out our individual needs and desires, because we exist in a context of our other relationships (and identities).

While driving to Kelowna, I found myself weeping for no apparent reason. I decided to let the storm of feeling pass through me, so I cried on and off while I drove. This continued even after I checked into my hotel room and ordered myself dinner.

As the evening progressed, I started to realise what was causing this storm of tears. I pulled out my journal and began to write. I worked through some things that had been building up during the summer. Questions about this new stage of life we’re about to enter as parents and as a family when William leaves for university in January.

I’m certain these feelings would’ve made themselves known whether I was at home or in Kelowna, but there’s something powerful about prioritising our own solitude from time to time. Over the two nights I was away, by myself, I could feel my identity recalibrating back into something I could recognise as my own.

Earlier this summer, we did a family driving trip down the coast to Los Angeles, one of my favourite places on planet earth. We had days of sun and soft sand and salty ocean air and palm trees and In-N-Out milkshakes. It was glorious. But it was a family trip, which meant all of our decisions were made together, with everyone’s needs and interests considered.

In the middle of August, I had a work trip to Alberta to speak at a writers’ conference and teach classes at a number of different libraries. For that trip, it was just Jason and I, which meant I left my Mom identity behind but remained in my Marriage identity. We had a wonderful trip, and I’m glad we went together, but I needed the alone time in Kelowna to understand the difference between solo trips and together trips.

When we give a lot of ourselves to others, it’s important to take time out for ourselves. I’ve been teaching this over the last six months in the form of nurture classes for writers and Nurture Starts with You sessions for teachers. But sometimes I fail to give it enough attention for myself.

It felt strange to say to Jason that I wanted to go to Kelowna on my own this time. He had loads of work to do and was happy to stay at home to look after Ted since William happened to be visiting his sister and some friends on the island when I was gone. But during my trip I realised how much it mattered that I listened to my own intuition. I gave myself time to feel things and a little bit of space and distance to better understand some relationship dynamics that were challenging to see up close.

This solo trip restored me to myself. It gave me time to reflect, and to cry, and to plan for the coming months. It helped me recalibrate my own sense of who I am.

Another Bridge to Take

In the song “This Ain’t Goodbye” by Train, there’s a lyric that brings me to tears. Every time he sings, “Another bridge to take on the way to letting go” I think about how hard it is to release my grip when I want something to stay the same.

But as we all know, life means change. Stages and seasons and growth and pain and learning to let go, over and over and over again. I really kind of hate this. You’d think we’d get better at this as we age, but some things give me a lump at the base of my throat, and keep me awake at night, and cause me to cry when I least expect them to.

One of those things is my youngest child graduating from high school. William has his school dinner/dance this weekend, and his commencement ceremony in a few weeks. This is a big bridge to take. When Ava graduated three years ago, I thought to myself, “William is only in grade nine. There’s lots of time left with a kid at home.”

And now the day is almost here. It’s a time to celebrate all that he’s achieved, and how bright his future looks ahead of him, but as the mom and dad, it’s also a time to grieve the end of his childhood. I’m really feeling the truth of the saying, “When raising children, the days are long but the years are short.”

With all of these significant life transitions (or another bridge to take on the way to letting go), I do my best to prepare emotionally ahead of time. I really do. But there’s anticipation, and then there’s experience. The two are never the same thing, which is another thing I hate because I have no choice but to walk through it when the time comes. Advance preparation only gets me so far, and then the only way out is ever through.

Another one of these bridges I had to take this month was when Ava decided to fly to New York City on her own and stay in a shared-room hostel near Central Park. We suggested she go with a friend, but after our family Europe adventure last summer she wanted to try a solo trip. In theory, I thought this was a fabulous idea, and very brave when you are only twenty-one. In reality, I worried about her until she arrived home safely—feet sore from walking the city at all hours and full to the brim with excitement and stories and joy from managing everything on her own.

These are important foundational experiences for our children to undertake. They have to learn that the world is a big place and they can be smart and travel safely within it. But for the parents, this involves a lot of letting go. Of being there when our kids need us, but not taking over every arrangement so they have their own chance to lead and to shine. It’s exciting. And hard. It requires us to give up some semblance of control, and to lean into trusting our grown kids.

I’m taking a lot of bridges right now, with both of my kids, and I’m slowly (so slowly!) learning to let go of them. Like so many parents, I’m proud, and I’m sad, and I’m a bit lost, and I’m celebrating at exactly the same time. We never stop learning how to adjust to these changing seasons.

It’s Okay to Ask for Help

When we were in London this summer, I was crying uncontrollably in a tube station when a train across the platform pulled ahead and directly across from me was a sign that read in big block letters: It’s Okay to Ask for Help.

I remember staring at it, through my tears, and looking from side to side like this message might be only visible to me. I saw my husband and my kids, waiting for our train and filled to the brim with enthusiasm on this first day of our 25 day European holiday, and I realised with a sense of impending doom that I was falling apart.

Sometimes it takes awhile to understand that we are not okay. I had no idea what to do on that underground platform when I couldn’t stop sobbing. I was exhausted, overwhelmed, stressed to the max, and full of fear. I felt alien to myself. I knew that my kids in particular were worried about me, and I couldn’t reassure them because I didn’t know what was happening myself.

But I clung to that tube station message, like a drowning person holds a life preserver, for the remainder of our trip. It helped me, when I felt utterly lost. I believed in a philosophical manner that it was okay to ask for help, but I had no real experience with this as a practical concept. I was accustomed to being the person who offered help to others. Receiving it for myself was a new experience.

When we got home in mid-August, I felt relieved. Once again, I was in familiar surroundings and felt slightly more capable. But slowly, I came to understand that I was not well and needed medical attention. Throughout the fall, I went to my doctor a lot. I cried in her office every single time. My blood pressure was too high. My sleeping was for shit, and for the first time I considered that I might be struggling with anxiety and depression.

She put me on an oestrogen gel for perimenopause symptoms, and within two weeks I felt significantly better. A month after that I went on the lowest possible dose of a blood pressure medicine, and my heart palpitations/generalized anxiety went away shortly after that. Two months on this medicine and my blood pressure is back to normal, where it always was before.

The long and the short of this post is that It’s Okay to Ask for Help. At any stage or age. Even when it’s inconvenient, like at the start of a big European holiday that we saved for and planned for nearly two years. It’s okay if you don’t even know what’s wrong. And it’s okay to fall apart if you are a wife and a mom and secure in your identity as the one who holds it all together for everyone else. Maybe it’s especially important to know it’s okay when it’s a foreign concept for you, like it was for me.

The second day of our trip, at a gorgeous old pub in Canary Wharf where we had lunch, I told my family that I was thinking about flying home. They were kind and gentle with me, assuring me that I should stay, and that I could take things at my own pace. It was strange and surreal to feel so sad and unmoored and not be able to articulate why I was feeling this way.

In the summer, I couldn’t find a reason, because I didn’t know the reason until the fall. But in ten different countries in Europe, I cried and felt overwhelmed and allowed myself to simply be a mess and not have it all figured out. Looking back on it now, I can see how freeing it was to let go. To ask for help and to try to figure out how to receive help from my loved ones. Jason, Ava, and William were their best selves on that trip. They all thrived, so they led the way and I followed.

As women, we need to learn to ask for help when we are struggling. The last half of 2023 has been a daily exercise in learning how to receive help from others: my family, my friends, my doctor, my counselor. It’s uncomfortable at first, but it’s so worth it, as now I feel stronger and better than I have in a long time. But it starts with asking for help.
